I read an interesting blogpost by @mindtraps today called How often do you have the rare opportunity to be a self made man?
Source
The post talked about how your post is “your” business, and you should realize that in any business quality and quantity count. All business wants to make “products” which their “customers” feel are worth their money. The terms quality and quantity are tantamount here. You certainly want to make a large number of posts “Quantity” here because we are paid by the post. But you also want to make good or even great posts, because “Quality” is important here too. People want you to post “good” stories and “good” pictures, and they want it every day. So, is that a reasonable expectation?
Well upon reflection these are my thoughts.
You could compare your blog to a sandwich shop. Every post is like a “sandwich” your shop made and each one represents the Shop’s quality, taste, cleanliness and freshness standards. Every time you eat there you would expect the same high quality. While we can debate whether that is realistic or not to have “every” sandwich be perfect, I am sure we all expect “our” sandwich to be perfect. So that realization stung me a little bit, because I know my posts vary in quality from ones I am very proud of to ones that are “okay”. My goal is high quality and high volume. But I suspect I don’t always “hit the mark” so to speak. So I am using that “sting” to motivate myself to try harder to insure that every post is like “ a perfect sandwich”.
Your blog is your business and your brand. Every blog is representing you to the world. So when you finish it and you are about to hit publish, you should ask yourself one question; Does this post do a good job of representing me and my talents to the world? If someone wanted to know how talented and creative I am, would this post be a good representation of me? If the answer is yes, then hit publish. If the answer is no, maybe the post needs more work. Remember, your blog is your brand and becomes what your known for, so to a certain extent your image and the way you are perceived are in your hands.
Now that is food for thought and I hope you liked my “sandwich” :)
