Steemfest 4 is over and SMT are on Testnet, the place we’re software developers and witnesses? go to test big software changes. The topic of SMT’s versus Steem Engine Tokens came up at SteemFest 4. I am not a developer, but after listening to the presentations and reading posts, I have formulated this idea or concept in my non-developer head.

SMT are close to or exactly like Steem, and run on the Steem blockchain, but a different name and different Token.
If you like everything that Steem does and basically don’t want to change anything except the name and the webpage appearance; SMT’s are for you. But remember changing things on a SMT requires a Steem HardFork, so it’s difficult to do.

Steem Engine Tokens are like Steem, but they are run on the side chain, and they give you cafeteria like flexibility to run a Steem like Token with much more flexibility. For example you don’t want downvotes, your tribe does have them. You want a different reward split between author and curator, no problem you can change that. You want a 3 day power down for staked tokens? No problem, you build that in. This seems to be the meat of the difference to me.

If you want more detail you can watch @aggroed’s talk at SteemFest 4 or read @exeyle post on SMT versus SE Tokens. Those posts are very helpful with minimum developer language and I Glendora’s these main differences from those posts
